The Pier E Container Yard – Intermodal Railyard project was the third and final phase of the Port of Long Beach’s $1.5B Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project. The finished project Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) would complete one of the most advanced and greenest shipping terminals in the world. The terminal which has an estimated capacity of 3.3m 20-foot cargo container units, provides fully electric cargo offloading of 3 ships simultaneously.
Construction on this project was over 100 acres and among other things it included the following elements: earthwork, underground, asphalt paving, concrete and rail. Work consisted of over 400k CY of earth moving, 200k CY of aggregate base, 20K CY of cement treated base, 90k tons of asphalt paving, 30k CY of Portland Cement Concrete and 17k CY roller compacted concrete. Underground included 15k feet of water system, 2k feet of sewer system, and 45k feet of storm drain system. For the rail portion there was 50k CY of railroad ballast, 30k feet of crane rail and foundation, roughly 10 miles of railroad track and 20 railroad turnouts. Finally, there was considerable fencing and electrical work, construction of small buildings, substations, and booths along with many other miscellaneous improvements.
This project faced several challenges, but Griffith Company successfully partnered with the Port to minimize the impact on project completion.
The completion of the Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project will offer multiple benefits: future job opportunities for the residents of Long Beach and surrounding communities, improvement of cargo transportation efficiency, reduction of transportation costs and the immense reduction of greenhouse gasses due to the facility being nearly all electrically powered.
