The 24th Street Improvement Project is an instrumental segment of the City of Bakersfield’s Thomas Road Improvement Program (TRIP). Identified as one of many projects necessary to relieve stress on inter-region travel and improve outdated infrastructure, the project included a lane addition in each direction along SR-178 from Kern River Bridge to the Union Avenue Exit Ramp. The work involved 70,000 tons of asphalt paving, 83,000 CY of Roadway Excavation, 15,000 LF of drainage improvements and 700 CY of drainage inlet improvements. In addition, there was 3,700 CY of minor concrete ADA enhancements, 22,260 SF of new sound walls, traffic signal improvements at 13 intersections and landscape and irrigation improvements.

The project team faced design and utility delays, including the relocation of a transcontinental fiber optic line running the length of the project. The team worked with the owner to restage the project to accommodate construction efficiencies and reduce cost impacts. The 2-year project was successfully completed on time and in budget in December 2020 without a loss time accident.
