The Wheeler Ridge Project was a 45-day contract to lay 60 lane miles of Rubberized Hot Mix Asphalt (RHMA) paving. To meet this aggressive milestone, a well-choreographed pre-bid schedule was put together utilizing two traffic control crews, with contract work taking place in both directions of the divided highway. All contract item work was completed successfully and accepted four days early. In addition, the 60 lane miles of RHMA paving only required one day of corrective profile grinding. Normally a project this size could need 10-15 days of profile grinding to achieve the exacting grade tolerances. The team was able to attain this high level of quality by improving the paving/milling process with the use of grade control technology on the equipment and adjusting the placement of control sensors for the best resulting product.
