State Route 33 runs north from Ventura on the coast to Vernalis in San Joaquin County.  In Kern County, Highway 33 is called the Westside Highway and in 2003 Griffith Company rehabilitated the roadway for six miles southwest of Maricopa. The CalTrans-sponsored project included providing new paved shoulders, installing drainage systems and paving a new roadway surfacing. A special challenge was cutting 16’ deep through Highway 33 to install a large diameter drainage system, while maintaining passage on the two-lane highway.
