Port of Los Angeles
2011
Wilmington, in the Port of Los Angeles, has been hit especially hard by the impact of international commerce. In the place of blight and trash, Griffith Company has constructed a 30-acre park that melds cultural and ecological history with green technology. We created a buffer between the community and the bustling industrial waterfront that provides a myriad of recreational opportunities including spectator viewing, lounging, sunbathing, sports activities and splashing-in-the-water features.
Our crews constructed iconic pedestrian bridges, performance pavilions, meandering walks, concession buildings, decorative fountains and an Adventure Playground for children to play. Some sustainability features include subsurface rock French drains along walkways, planter beds and low points to promote the infiltration of storm water, light management within the site, drought-tolerant plant materials and reclaimed water for irrigation.
Our project team worked through redesigns and sequencing changes, partnering closely with the Port staff to ensure this important community project stayed on schedule. Our hard work provides the perfect setting for community events, picnics and evening strolls for neighborhood families. Once again, Griffith Company is building California and improving another community in our backyard.
